Explorer Sebastian Vizcaino names the small islands offshore Los Coronados, the crowned ones. Later the name settles on the peninsula itself.
Five investors buy Coronado and North Island for $110,000 and set out to create a seaside resort, laying out the street grid of the Village you walk today.
The Hotel del Coronado welcomes its first guests in February. More than a century later it remains the island's landmark and a National Historic Landmark since 1977.
The community incorporates on December 11, and local government takes shape around the Village.
Glenn Curtiss opens the first U.S. flying school on the island's north end. That flat sandy ground becomes Naval Air Station North Island, still a major part of local life.
The Army leaves and the Navy takes over the whole north end, cementing the naval presence that shapes Coronado's community.
The 2.1-mile Coronado Bridge opens on August 3, replacing the ferry that had served the island since 1886 and putting downtown minutes away.
A passenger ferry starts running again on June 20, and the Ferry Landing becomes a waterfront gathering place.
The bridge toll ends on June 27, making the trip on and off the island free.
