- Check the commute. If you will work off the island, drive your route at the hours you would travel. Bridge traffic is different at rush hour.

Errands, dining and community events cluster around Orange Avenue and Spreckels Park, which hosts concerts and events through the year. Because streets are compact, ask about parking for guests and for any second vehicle.

Older homes are common, so build time into your schedule for inspections and a careful look at permits and historic status. If you are buying from out of state, ask for disclosures, permit history and inspection reports early so you can review them remotely.
